My Friend: Rev. Greg Knox Shares About Christmas

Is Santa Satan in disguise (there is after all, the same letters in both names, as some guardians of all that is good remind us). Or is Santa a Christian after all, since he really is St. Nicholas, a Christian bishop of the fourth century? So which is it? Is Santa Claus harmless or spawned in hell or something in between? Though knowing his origin can't decide all these questions, it still is an important point to ponder.

Actually, the truth of the matter is that the modern Santa Claus is a conglomeration of sources, a legendary being that has evolved over the years. Along the way, pre-Christian legends, the story of St. Nicholas, Dutch immigrants to America, Washington Irving, Clement Moore, Thomas Nast, and the Coca-Cola company, all made their contributions.

If you've ever seen "The Santa Clause" then you will agree that it's well known that the name "Santa Claus" comes to us by way of the Dutch "Sinter Klaas," which in turn, was a form of Saint Nicholas. Our modern Santa Claus took his name from the Christian Saint Nicholas so we need to begin with a look at this Christian bishop of the fourth century.

Throughout history Nicholas of Myra (A.D.350) has been one of the most beloved saints even apart from the Santa Claus context. In fact, George McKnight claims that both in the eastern and western Church, Nicholas is "the object of extreme veneration, to a degree unequaled in the case of any other saint." (George H. McKnight, St. Nicholas: His Legend and His Role in the Christmas Celebration and Other Popular Customs (New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1917), 29).

The first historical record of his veneration is the fact that the emperor Justinian built a church in his honor in Constantinople around the year 540 AD. Nicholas is patron saint of entire nations, including Greece, Russia, Sicily, and Lorraine, and many cities throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, and Italy. He is also patron saint of children, bakers, merchants, and mariners.

Ironically, very little factual information is actually known about this most popular of all the saints. There is scarcely any definite historical fact known about him except that he was bishop of Myra in Asia Minor; that he was cast into exile and prison during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian and released by Constantine the Great; that he died in Myra about 350, and in the year 1087 his body was brought by Italian merchants from Myra to the city of Bari in Italy, where his relics are still preserved and venerated in the church of San Nicola.

The Feast of St. Nicholas on Dec. 6 has been observed with great enthusiasm throughout Medieval Europe over the centuries. This enthusiasm was due to the many legends that had grown up around Nicholas: that he had distributed gifts to the poor at night through their windows, had fasted while a baby, had helped dowerless maidens, saved a city from famine, had aided a ship in distress, etc.

Because of the gift-giving legends associated with Nicholas, it was held (especially in Belgium and Holland) that on the Eve of the Feast of Nicholas, the bishop himself would come from heaven and visit children in their homes, giving gifts to those who had been good. Nicholas, decked out in full ecclesiastical garb (bishop's robe), would arrive on a flying gray horse (or white donkey, depending on the custom). In some variations of the legend, he was accompanied by Black Peter, an elf whose job was to punish children who had been bad.

It's held by some scholars that the legends of Nicholas as gift-giver drew in part from pagan, preChristian sources. For example, the Teutonic god of the air, Odin, would ride through the air on a gray horse (named Sleipnir) each Autumn - so did Nicholas; Odin had a long white beard - so did Nicholas; a sheaf of grain was left in the field for Odin's horse - children left a wisp of straw in their shoes for Nicholas. Others claim that attributes of the Germanic god Thor, the god of thunder, were transferred to Nicholas. Thor was supposedly elderly and heavy with a long white beard; he rode through the air in a chariot drawn by two white goats (called Cracker and Gnasher); he dressed in red; his palace was in the "northland;" he was friendly and cheerful; he would come down the chimney into his element, the fire. No definitive correlation has ever been found between the "visit of St. Nicholas" and pagan gods such as Odin and Thor. However the similarity is striking and some relationship seems likely.

Showing We Care - Special Offering

Dear Southside Family,

I am excited to share with you information regarding the Showing We Care Special Offering that begins now and continues through January 31, 2010.

Over the last 3 years we have been a part of God planting a new church in the south side of Newberg. Southside was planted as a church that would show the love and healing that only comes from Jesus. Along the way we have used the resources that God has entrusted us with to tell our community, "God loves you and so do we". With this Special Offering we have the opportunity to deepen the impact on our city, enlarge our ministry to our regular attenders and engage those without a church in our country and world.

The offering will be designated for supporting global and U.S. missions, sharing God's love with our city through Servant Evangelism, fund our benevolence ministry that will assist the poor and needy and enhance the Southside Kidz experience on Sunday.

I hope you will carefully read over the enclosed documents to learn about this exciting opportunity for us to give sacrificially.

Will you begin praying now about what God would have you give, over and above your regular giving, to this Special Offering? Allow God to stretch your faith!

Your Friend,

Pastor Willy Burns

P.S. The following post will give you an overview of the special offering and answer many common questions. However, if you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact me by phone (971*832*2427) or e-mail.

OVERVIEW

The SHOWING WE CARE Special Offering is a call to sacrificial giving with a goal of $3,000 for four ministry initiatives:

• To support Global / U.S. missions

• To share God's love to our city through Servant Evangelism.

• To tangibly support Love Inc. and to fund the 2010 Benevolence Ministry.

• To enhance the Southside Kidz experience on Sunday and address key capital improvements.

This Special Offering will be received through January 31, 2010.

Use the giving envelope or mark your checks with "Showing We Care."

THE PURPOSE OF THIS OFFERING

To support Global / U.S. missions.

Over the next year we will be doing missions work in the U.S. and Globally. This offering will help fund out missions outreach for 2010.

To share God's love to our city through Servant Evangelism.

We want to continue to be aggressive in reaching our city through Servant Evangelism by the combined efforts of our attenders We believe that together we can continue to show God's love in a practical way when we make it a priority across our church.

To tangibly support local organizations that assist the poor and needy in Newberg and to fund the 2010 Benevolence ministry.

We have a unique opportunity to help those in the greatest need in our community! We want to partner with local organizations that are really making a difference in peoples' lives and at the same time sharing the love of Jesus in a very practical way. That's why we partner with Love Inc. – because they have consistently made a difference in peoples' lives and demonstrated effectiveness in seeing lives change.
This year, we want to invest in them and join them in making a big difference in meeting the most basic needs of our city. This offering will go to support that effort.
We are anticipating and preparing for an increase in benevolence requests in 2010 due to the current economic climate.

To enhance the Southside Kidz experience at Southside.

We are a church that loves to invest in children and families. We consider it an honor to help a family make the best spiritual impact on their children's lives, help them raise a child that will choose to follow Jesus, and have a strong home. To do this, we have designed a fantastic experience for children on Sunday called Southside Kidz.
We are always looking to make BIG improvements in Southside Kidz, and 2010 is no different! We have several planned improvements over the course of the next year that will help you ensure that this is the best hour of your child's week, and that will put us in the best place to invest in your family spiritually.
To sum it up we want to provide the best opportunity for the people of Newberg to become fully-developing followers of Jesus! We want to use the best resources, offer the greatest opportunities to grow spiritually, and create unique and creative settings to consider a relationship with Jesus.
We know that in order to do that, we need to stay ahead in our equipment, facility setup, and resourcing to see this happen. In 2010, part of this offering will go to make significant investments in capital improvements to allow the church to stay ahead and remain relevant to this purpose.

Why a Special Offering?

As part of God's plan to grow the faith of the people in His church, He calls us to sacrificial giving from time to time. This Special Offering is an opportunity for us to grow in our faith and to prepare us for what God wants to do through our church in 2010. This offering is not because we are behind on budget, but rather is to position us to make a greater impact in our city, in our church and around the world in 2010.

What's the Difference Between the Regular Offering and this Special Offering?

The regular Southside offering is the proportional amount (the full tithe of 10%) that we set apart on a systematic basis and give throughout the year. From time to time there are opportunities to give in a sacrificial way. This Special Offering is one of those sacrificial occasions that stretch us and allow us to grow in our faith. The special offering should be over and above what you regularly give.

When Should I Give?

The best time to give will be the first Sunday after you receive this packet. Please pray about making your best gift on that day. However, you can continue to give until January 31, 2010.
Remember, consistent gifts over time add up – a person giving $50 per week over a ten-week period will give $500 to this Special Offering.

How Much Should I Give?

Since the goal is $3,000, this Special Offering will involve everyone. Please prayerfully consider a sacrificial gift that will stretch your faith. The precise amount you give is between you and God. Many in our church can give a $500, $750 or even a $1000 gift. Others will be able to give between $100 and $500. The issue is not equal giving, but equal sacrifice. What amount can you give that will stretch your faith?

Why is the Goal So Large?

We have been a church that has dared to dream big dreams for God. The ministries supported by this offering are BIG – supporting global and U.S. missions, sharing God's love with our city through Servant Evangelism, supporting local organizations that assist the poor and needy, funding the 2010 Benevolence ministry and enhancing the Southside Kidz experience on Sunday. Big dreams require big faith and big funding. The accomplishment of these big dreams will be determined by your gifts to this Special Offering.

FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I Give In-Kind Gifts of Stocks or Bonds?

Of course! Since Southside is a 501c3 organization there can be tremendous tax benefits for you by giving in-kind gifts. For information on this type of giving, simply contact Pastor Willy at: willy@southsidenewberg.org

Are My Gifts Tax-Deductible?

All gifts to Southside, whether via the regular offering or this Special Offering, are completely tax- deductible. Your gift will be deductible in the tax year given (i.e., gifts given in 2009 will be deductible on your 2009 taxes). Please be sure to include your name and address when you give so that a receipt can be sent to you for your tax preparations. You are not required to utilize a tax-deduction for your gift, but it is available for all gifts.

How Did We Arrive at a $3,000 Goal?

The $3,000 goal was prayerfully set by the Southside Leadership. It is approximately three times our regular weekly giving. It is a God-sized goal that can only be accomplished through 100% participation and sacrificial giving by our Southside attenders and members. Since we are expecting God to bless this Special Offering, it has been determined that any amount over and above our goal will be divided equally between Missions and Ministry Advancement.

How Will I Know if We Reach Our Goal?

Please pray for God's guidance as we all give sacrificially. You will be updated on our giving progress during the service, beginning this Sunday, and continuing through the last Sunday in January. Reaching this goal will be a celebration of what we can do together as we stretch our faith under God's leadership.

The Anthropic Cosmological Principle

Over the last month I have been reading a series of email teachings put out by my lifelong pastor, Greg Knox. They have been discussing the anthropic cosmological principle. Basically it outlines what conditions would be necessary for life to exist on this planet and the mathematical odds of life occurring.

It is important as believers that we grapple with the claims of the Bible and science to prepare ourselves to always be ready to give a defense for the hope that lies within us.

Over the next few weeks we will be exploring some of the fine tuning that is required for life to exist on planet earth.

We will learn how everyday conditions on Earth are necessary for life to continue, even conditions that we wish did not exist, such as earthquakes and lightening.

Here is a layman's definition of the anthropic principle:

In physics and cosmology, the anthropic principle is the collective name for several ways of asserting that the observations of our physical universe must be compatible with the life observed in it. The principle was formulated as a response to a series of observations which seemed to show that the laws of nature and its physical constants were uncannily set in a way that allowed conditions for life.

Let's get started with this brief intro... I am looking forward to this discovery together!

Quotes from Scientists Regarding Design of the Universe

by Rich Deem

Does science lead us down a road that ends in the naturalistic explanation of everything we see? In the nineteenth century, it certainly looked as though science was going in that direction. The "God of the gaps" was finding himself in a narrower and narrower niche. However, 20th century and now 21st century science is leading us back down the road of design - not from a lack of scientific explanation, but from scientific explanation that requires an appeal to the extremely unlikely - something that science does not deal well with. As a result of the recent evidence in support of design, many scientists now believe in God. According to a recent article:
"I was reminded of this a few months ago when I saw a survey in the journal Nature. It revealed that 40% of American physicists, biologists and mathematicians believe in God--and not just some metaphysical abstraction, but a deity who takes an active interest in our affairs and hears our prayers: the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."
The degree to which the constants of physics must match a precise criteria is such that a number of agnostic scientists have concluded that there is some sort of "supernatural plan" or "Agency" behind it. Here is what they say:
The quotes
Fred Hoyle (British astrophysicist): "A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question."

George Ellis (British astrophysicist): "Amazing fine tuning occurs in the laws that make this [complexity] possible. Realization of the complexity of what is accomplished makes it very difficult not to use the word 'miraculous' without taking a stand as to the ontological status of the word."

Paul Davies (British astrophysicist): "There is for me powerful evidence that there is something going on behind it all....It seems as though somebody has fine-tuned nature’s numbers to make the Universe....The impression of design is overwhelming".

Paul Davies: "The laws [of physics] ... seem to be the product of exceedingly ingenious design... The universe must have a purpose".

Alan Sandage (winner of the Crawford prize in astronomy): "I find it quite improbable that such order came out of chaos. There has to be some organizing principle. God to me is a mystery but is the explanation for the miracle of existence, why there is something instead of nothing."

John O'Keefe (astronomer at NASA): "We are, by astronomical standards, a pampered, cosseted, cherished group of creatures.. .. If the Universe had not been made with the most exacting precision we could never have come into existence. It is my view that these circumstances indicate the universe was created for man to live in."

George Greenstein (astronomer): "As we survey all the evidence, the thought insistently arises that some supernatural agency - or, rather, Agency - must be involved. Is it possible that suddenly, without intending to, we have stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a Supreme Being? Was it God who stepped in and so providentially crafted the cosmos for our benefit?"

Arthur Eddington (astrophysicist): "The idea of a universal mind or Logos would be, I think, a fairly plausible inference from the present state of scientific theory."

Arno Penzias (Nobel prize in physics): "Astronomy leads us to a unique event, a universe which was created out of nothing, one with the very delicate balance needed to provide exactly the conditions required to permit life, and one which has an underlying (one might say 'supernatural') plan."

Roger Penrose (mathematician and author): "I would say the universe has a purpose. It's not there just somehow by chance."

Tony Rothman (physicist): "When confronted with the order and beauty of the universe and the strange coincidences of nature, it's very tempting to take the leap of faith from science into religion. I am sure many physicists want to. I only wish they would admit it."

Vera Kistiakowsky (MIT physicist): "The exquisite order displayed by our scientific understanding of the physical world calls for the divine."

Robert Jastrow (self-proclaimed agnostic): "For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

86400 Second Every Day... Use It Or Lose It!

About a year ago I listened to a talk the Rick Warren gave on time management. I thought It was very good so I wanted to share my notes with you from that talk... enjoy!

If we live an average life of 70 years that will mean that each one of us will spend:

A. 23 Years asleep
B. 17 Years Working
C. 11 Years Watching TV / Playing
D. 6 Years Traveling
E. 2 Years Getting Ready
F. 1 Year in Church

Ephesians 5 tells us to live life with responsibility. What does that mean?

1. First we have to understand that time management is life management. When we are just killing time we are in essence committing suicide! We all have 168 hrs. per week... how do we use them?

2. Ephesians 5:17 Don't live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants.

We need to understand what our purpose is, (that's why we are doing the Purpose Driven Life this fall as a church).

       1. Know God / Worship
       2. Grow Like Jesus / Discipleship
       3. Over Flow with Love / Fellowship
       4. Show your gifts / Ministry
       5. Go tell others / Evangelism

Every person needs 2 things:
1. Ministry (if you are not involved in serving, you should be)
2. Mission

You are not accountable to the expectations of others, only God, you cannot please everyone! We have just enough time in this life to do God's will.

Here are some tips on how to prioritize your life:

1. Keep a journal of how you are using your time for a couple of days, look back over it and ask the question, is this how I want to use my time? " An unexamined life is not one worth living" -Socrates
       a. Just because something is prior does not make it a priority... something more important may come up!

2. Say NO to a lot of stuff.

3. Group similar tasks together: phone calls, meetings, errands...

4. Plan your week in 21 segments: 7 Morning / Noon / Evening segments.

5. Use all of your "free time". Loose change time, redeem your time. Cary a book or audio resource to help you grow when you are "stuck waiting" somewhere.

6. Maintain a "relaxed attitude". Proverbs 14:30 A sound mind makes for a robust body, but runaway emotions corrode the bones.

7. Put God first by scheduling time for Him first every day.

8. Utilize the present... there is no time like the present, don't waste your days.

5 things to do EVERY day:

1. Use today to worship God
2. Use today to fellowship
3. Use today to  Grow
4. Use today to serve others
5. Use today to share your faith

Given all of this advice... what would be some next steps that you could take to help you improve how you use your time?

Be blessed and make the most of your days!

Running Like Your Pants are on Fire

This is going to be a busy fall. We have so many exciting opportunities comming up:

1. C.S. Lewis Work Days: This Sat. the 26th & Oct. 10th - 9am

2. Leadership Summit Oct. 2nd - 4th

3. Community Groups Begin the week of Oct. 4th – week of Dec. 13th

4. Prayer Service – Oct. 10th @ C.S. Lewis

5. First Service @ C.S. Lewis Oct. 11th - 10am

6. The Harvest Outreach – Oct. 24th - 10:30-2:30

7. Grand Re-Opening @ C.S. Lewis – Oct. 25th – 10am

And that is just October!

If you love to serve than this October is going to be packed with a ton of opportunities for you to reach out with love.

There are a lot of changes taking place at Southside and you might feel like your head is spinning... I want to encourage you to hold on and dig in with me. We are going to work for the Lord with all of our hearts and at times it may feel like we are running with our pants on fire, but the call has never been greater. We live in a time when people’s needs are the greatest and we have to get mobilized to help meet some of those needs.

This October we are going to meet some of those needs by having a Harvest Outreach. While this summer we got busy sowing the seeds of love, this fall we are going to reap a harvest!

We are going to spend the day feeding our neighbors, loving our neighbors and inviting them to hear the gospel and be a part of a ministry where they can plug into a community group and begin the journey of learning who God is..

This is going to be so exciting! Are you catching the vision? God is going to do a miracle in some people’s lives this fall and we get to be a part of it.

All of this hard work, all of this labor is to prepare US to be ready to receive all who God brings us. I know that if we are faithful to do what God has called us to, then He will be faithful with the increase.

Jesus said that He would build His church, and what a partner to have!
Southside... Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up! (Gal. 6:9)

Looking forward to the harvest with you,

Pastor Willy

Community Groups

Well August has come to a close and so has our summer term. I know that it was a great time for me to get to know families in the church better, as I am sure, you did too!

September there will be no groups going on. It is a busy time, getting back into the swing of school and work. Nick (my son) starts his first day of 1st grade today! Angel is home schooling, so it has been a little crazy around here. Yesterday we went to a school supply store and picked up last minute stuff for this year of school. There is something about the way freshly sharpened pencils smell that I really like. Probably just another case of “grandma’s cookies”.
This fall (October) we will start our new community groups. They will last only 10 weeks ending the second week of December and not meet at all during the week of Thanksgiving. We are going to be doing a church wide study this term of the Purpose Driven Life and serving once together, probably at the Burnside Shelter.

WHY!!!

Let me give you 5 good reasons:

1. People live a far more satisfying, contented life when they know what their purpose is. The book, teaches us about our 5 purposes in life. Although many of us may have gone through this before, it is probably time to do it again! After all, most likely none of us can list all five of the purposes... or even one!

To further illustrate the point let me show you something:

Ebbinghaus’s Forgetting Curve. Ebbinghaus studied forgetting in the late 1800s. He found that retention and forgetting occur over time and plotted his data: the famous forgetting curve. Look at the diagram, after just 9 hours we have forgotten 70% of the data!

Sooooo, if it has been more than 9 hours since you read the book, you have most likely fogotten 70% of the content. By the way, that is why we keep on preaching out of the Bible every week... we need it because we forget it!!!

2. We already have all of the books and teaching DVDs. The book retails for $14.95 and you get one FREE when you join a community group this fall!

3. You will grow spiritually when you go through this study in a group, and the entire church will grow when we are all learning the same truths at the same time!

4. Even Jesus was in a group! You should be too!!

5. Groups are an opportunity to let God speak into your life, you don't want to miss THAT opportunity!

Group sign-ups will start next week; if you are interested in being in a group you can sign up online: www.southsidenewberg.org OR sign up at church Sunday mornings.

Be blessed,

Pastor Willy

P.S. this is going to be a great study to invite a friend to. Now is the time to start asking your friends if they would like to attend with you, remember, most people never come because they are never asked!

There is Power at work in YOU!

Today I was reading in Ephesians 3:20 and I was struck by an overwhelming since of nostalgia. I grew up in the Redmond Free Methodist church and nearly every Sunday, Pastor Greg Knox, (my pastor for 23 years) would end the service by quoting this verse as a closing prayer:
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Sometimes you hear a message so often that it can lose its impact. Today, as I read that scripture I was challenged in a fresh way.

You see, the devil will do everything in his power to stop the church from reaching lost people that he can do... one of the best ways is to get our focus off of God and making disciples and onto ourselves and our problems. The fact is, the devil IS going to attack us and try to destroy us. The scriptures tell us the he has a plan for our lives. He wants to KILL, STEAL and DESTROY YOU... and ME... and the church.

Southside is encountering some big attacks in this season of ministry and I want to ask you to be in prayer for our church.

One of my colleagues preached a sermon on this verse and I wanted to share part of it with you as an encouragement:

You know, I believe in Ephesians 3:20, "Now unto him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church." I believe He wants glory in His Church and I believe He gains that glory by allowing the Church through His power to do things beyond what we can even dream, and I think God wants to go way beyond where we are now. I think we're just beginning to see what God would do when a group of people as totally committed to walk a worthy, when a group of people is totally committed to live the kind of life that Ephesians 4, 5, and 6 calls for. But as soon as that begins, Satan will oppose it. We see it all around us. You go back into the Old Testament, for example, and you see God sending an angel in Daniel chapter 10, and a demon withholds that angel so that that angel cannot accomplish the divine purpose, and God had to dispatch a greater angel, a stronger angel, to blast that demon out and send that angel on his way.

You find in Jude 9 Michael the archangel having a battle with Satan over the body of Moses. Satan trying to restrain Michael from claiming the body of Moses for God. So there is a high level spiritual struggle and we're even involved. Ephesians 6:12, "We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies. So we're engaged in this tremendous conflict, and that's why I say it's way. I think American Christianity is become very smug and very content and it is almost sub cultural, rather than confronting we're just kind of waltzing along with the system, trying to accommodate. We believe we can win them by becoming what they are. But just the opposite is true--we have to counter the system.

Well, we need to be aware of the fact that Satan's going to attack. You know, James in chapter 4 says, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." I Pet. 5:8,9 Peter says, "Be sober, be vigilant." Why? "Because your adversary the devil like a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world." In other: words, Satan is going to be there. Resist him. Be sober. Be vigilant, be aware. Be alert, and know what he is doing

Southside, now is the time to be bold for God and not to shrink back! Here is my parting prayer for you and for the ministry of Southside.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen

The Only Wise God

Job 38:31-33 (The Message)

31-33 "Can you catch the eye of the beautiful Pleiades sisters, or distract Orion from his hunt?
Can you get Venus to look your way, or get the Great Bear and her cubs to come out and play?
Do you know the first thing about the sky's constellations and how they affect things on Earth?

OR

Job 38:33 (New Living Translation)

33 Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth?

One of the things I often think on is how remarkable God is. Now I don't mean that in a hackneyed kind of way but more in the splendid, awesomeness of the God of the Universe, kind of way!

Do you ever stop to think about all of the "stuff" that God knows? Sometimes I sit and think about that. He's probably watching our scientists right now saying, "ooohhhh you are sooo close to getting that, come on, you can do it... keep it up!"

Have you ever thought about how God already knows how every substance in the entire universe will react with every other substance in the universe at every level and in every quantity!

Things that we are exploring and pioneering God is already intimately aware of.

Think about how long it was that man believed that we were the center of the universe and that everything was swirling around us, then one day a scientist came on the scene and said, "no, I think the sun is in the middle". It was still a couple hundred years before main-stream scientist caught up with this new idea. All the while God must have been watching the argument and chuckling to himself. NOT laughing at us, but laughing with delight, the same way a parent of a toddler laughs as she tries for the first time to feed herself.

It is amazing when we consider the universe and all of the details that we are discovering that one by one drive nails into the theory of evolution and focus us more and more on the reality of I.D. (Jesus).

You know when you watch Star Wars and you see two distant suns setting in the distance and think how very, very cool that would be!  The reality is that two suns would produce too much radiation and everyone on the planet would be nuked!

Our moon... we take it for granted, but it has so much to do with life on this planet. All of the systems that God has designed that we are yet to discover.

And then in Job we read this passage in the oldest book of the Bible, this statement: "Do you know the first thing about the sky's constellations and how they affect things on Earth?"

What is amazing to me is that I know we, with all of our modern day knowledge and sophistication, do not know the full implication of what God was saying to Job.

Do we know every way that the stars influence life on this planet, I am sure we do not. Yet somehow all of the mystery of this universe pales when compared to an eternal, all powerful, all knowing God.

We will know him for eternity and yet never fully know all that He is, of this I am convinced!

Be Blessed,

Pastor Willy

Top ten reasons why sharia is bad for all societies

I am writing a paper on Pakistan and reading a great book (so far) "Three Cups of Tea" (thanks Chris) I found this article on the American Thinker Blog and thought that it may be useful to you in understanding Islamic Law a little bit better. Now, regardless of what you think about the American Thinker I want to encourage you to read it and think about how this has impacted our culture and cultures around the world.

Be blessed,

It's called the economy stupid!

Southside,

We are in the midst of one of the biggest economic crisis since the great depression and many independent forecasters agree that the hemorrhage is not over and we may enter into a second depression that will dwarf the great depression. Some have dubbed it "The Greatest Depression".

As believers we should be prepared to help as much as possible in time of crisis. We should have three priorities, listed in order of priority:

1. Take care of our families
2. Take care of our church family
3. Take care of our community

In order to be able to do this we need to make sure that our house is in order. Here is a check list that will help prepare you and your family for emergencies, including natural disasters.

Be blessed,
Pastor Willy

Confessions of a Reformission Rev. - Book Review

I am reading a great book written by Mark Driscoll, "Confessions of a Reformission Rev." The book chronicles Mars Hill's journey as a church from 0 - 4000 members. Mars Hill is a Seattle church that is culturally relevant and also fiercely Biblical, both in its teaching and practice. In chapter 0, titled: Ten Curious Questions, Mark ask this question:

Question 7

Will your church have a mission of community or be a community of mission?

The buzzword community is so often bantered about that it is nearly devoid of meaning. But since the church is a community, it is important to define what kind of community the church should be. Without a clear definition of what a missional church community is and does, tragically, community will become the mission of the church. Consequently, the goal of people will be to hang out together in love, like the family they never had. While this is not evil, it is also not sufficient.

If taken too far, this can lead to the heresy of participatory redemption, in which the goal is to have authentic friendships and a loving community instead of repentance and personal faith in Jesus Christ as the means of salvation. This error is a very real threat is overlooked by many young Christian Leaders I meet who prefer small and more loosely defined neo-church arrangements and so-called new monastic communities, in which being in community sometimes takes priority over being in Christ.

In Scripture, we see two prototypical communities: Babel/Babylon and Pentecost. Their similarities and differences are noted below.

The Babylonian version of community is godless affinity. Babylonian community does not aspire to grow except by internal births, dies not welcome people who are different, does not practice hospitality, and seeks to remain safe and successful. Community is the only goal for churches who think Babylonian. God’s response to Babylonian community is judgment and scattering, because it is a sin, especially in the church.

The Pentecost version of community exists for mission, not for itself. Pentecost community is not held together because people are similar but rather because they are on the same mission with the same Lord. Because of this, Pentecost community is marked by a desire to expand God’s kingdom through salvation of many diverse people, who are hospitably welcomed to learn about the greatness of Jesus.

People who think with a Pentecost mindset do not see the building of community in their church as their mission. Rather they see their church community as existing solely for God’s mission, and they accept that the only way to have healthy community is to pursue God’s mission of reaching lost people because community is an effect of mission but not an effective mission. God’s response to Pentecost missional community is grace an unity through the Holy Spirit.

Be blessed as you build a Penticost Community,

Pastor Willy

Stephen R. Covey The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

There has been a popular saying in Free Methodist Circles over the last several years when it came to the life of the church, "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing".

I have lately been reminded of the fact that secondary issues, if allowed, will divert your attention from what is really important!

One thing that I learned from my Theology professor, Dr. Gary Habermas, was the difference between 1st Order theological issues and 2nd order Theological issues.
First order or First importance issues are the non-negotiables of the faith. These are often referred to as the Fundamentals. If you have ever attended a fundamental church you would readily recognize this term. It is basically referring to the 5 non-negotiables:

1. The literal inerrancy of the autographs of scripture. (The word autographs means the original writings of the authors of scripture, so manuscript copies and translations are not included in what is inerrant according to the fundamentals.)
2. The virgin birth and deity of Christ.
3. The substitutionary view of the atonement.
4. The bodily resurrection of Christ.
5. The imminent return of Christ.
Or some variation of these.

Second order theological issues would be things that we could disagree on and still consider that person to be a believer. Here is an example:

Special Creation is a first order theological position. The time and length of creation is a second order issue. In other words, all Christians believe that God created the universe, how he did that is a different issue all together. If you believe in The Big Bang, The Gap Theory, or a Literal 7 Day creation as I do, you can still be a Christian.

Now I know that some of you at this point are feeling sleepy, and I am sorry to get all theological on you, but this is very important for us to understand in order to maintain unity in the body.

The point is that on the negotiables it is ok to have differing opinions and to still love and fellowship together.
Here are some examples of negotiable:

1. The Tribulation
2. Women in Ministry
3. Worship styles
4. The duration of Hell
5. Sign Gifts (Healing, Tongues, Apostle, Miracles & Interpretation of Tongues)

And there are many more… all of which can be violently divisive if we allow, more than one church, more than one person, more than one denomination has been wounded and divided by choosing to focus on secondary issues.

I believe that this is one of the MOST EFFECTIVE strategies of the devil!

I want to admonish you… “Keep the main thing the main thing.”

Jesus told us what the main thing was just before He ascended. Remember, He said to go and make disciples!

As a church plant we cannot afford to have our time and energy diverted from this important work! We must all be diligent to keep the mission that Christ charged us with on the forefront of our mind and actions.

Southside, what are you doing this summer to use your gifts and serve God in making disciples?

Keep your eyes on Jesus and your focus on building His kingdom and all the secondary issues will fall into line.

Should women be pastors?

Here is a great article that I read yesterday in Rev magazine. I hope you enjoy it, I found it to be very good.

Pastor Willy

Your Sons AND Daughters Will Prophesy
By James N. Watkins

I've always wanted to be in some kind of ministry, but I always thought of it as being a pastor's wife. But now I'm sensing that God is calling me into more pastoral ministries." Hannah was a sophomore on the campus where I served as communications pastor of an adjoining church.
That's great, Hannah!"

Well, not really. My home church doesn't believe women should preach or be in any kind of authority."

“And what do you think about women in ministry?"

"I don't know. I'm just confused. What do you think?"

It's a difficult question with multiple conclusions. Some denominations allow women to be ordained and to fill any pastoral and administrative position. Some limit women to children and women's ministries, but don't allow any administrative authority or teaching over men. And all believe they have biblical arguments for their case.

In looking at this issue, it might be helpful to utilize what has become known as John Wesley's "quadrilateral." While the founder of Methodism and the holiness denominations didn't call it such, he did teach that finding God's position on an issue or decision involves scripture, tradition (the two-thousand-year-old history of the church), reason (rational thinking and sensible interpretation) and experience (not a personal experience, but an experience of the larger Christian community). "When all four line up, it's evidence of God's approval concerning the issue or decision."

Scripture

"So, Hannah, what kind of roles for women do you find in Scripture?" Hannah had just taken Old and New Testament Survey classes, so she had a ready answer.
She began with Adam and Eve both being created in the image of God and both being given authority to rule over creation. It was not until after the fall that Eve's equal role was diminished. She also noted that the mutual dominion and mutual submission was reinstated "in Christ" (Galatians 3:28, Ephesians 5:21).
Hannah moved on to Miriam, the sister of Moses, who was a prophetess. Hulda was a prophetess (2 Kings 22:14-20) who authenticated the contents of the scrolls found during the reign of Josiah. Deborah was a prophetess and a judge who ruled over the kingdom of Israel (Judges 4:4-5).

Women had an expanded role in the New Testament from the very beginning. In Luke 2:36-38, the prophetess Anna spoke to those in the temple of Christ "to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem."
Jesus included women in circle of disciples: Mary, Martha, Joanna, Mary Magdalene, Susanna, and "many more."

On the day of Pentecost, the apostle Peter quoted the prophet Joel to explain what the Holy Spirit was doing: "I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. . . . Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out of my Spirit in those days" (Acts 2:16 NIV).

Women prophesied in the early church (Acts 21:9), and Paul supported women prophesying and praying publicly in the church services as a normal practice (1 Cor. 11:5). He included the names of Phoebe as a "deacon"—there is no word "deaconess" used in the Greek texts (Rom. 16:1). Some ancient manuscripts appear to refer to a woman apostle by the name of Junia (Rom. 16:7), and Paul listed women whom he called his "fellow-laborers": Mary, Tryphaena, Tryphosa, Persis, Julia, Nereus' sister, and Olympas. Euodia and Syntyche "worked side by side" with Paul.

"Very good, Hannah."

"But, what do I do with these passages?" Hannah opened her Bible to 1 Corinthians 14:34, 35:
"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church."

Hannah then turned to 1 Timothy 2:11-12:
"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence."
"My church takes those literally."

"Do they really, Hannah? Do women teach Sunday school? Do they sing in the choir? Do they talk in the church foyer."

"Hmmm? I guess they only take some literally."

"The problem with taking these texts as commands for all churches for all time is that they don't harmonize with the hundreds of other biblical examples of women prophesying and leading the church. For those churches, where women were illiterate, where matriarchal goddess worship was loud and lewd (and converts may not have abandoned those worship practices), it made sense. But in the majority of cases, women had positions of prominence. Lydia was a church leader in Philipi, Priscilla led three churches in Rome, Corinth and Ephesus as well as discipling Apollos."
Dr. David Thompson of Asbury Seminary asks, "Do we read the entire Bible in light of these two problematic texts, or do we read these two texts in light of the rest of the Bible?"

I continued, "Because arguments from Scripture are often proof-texted, that's why Wesley suggested looking at three other elements."

Tradition

"You're taking church history next semester, right?" I went on to explain that into the middle of the second century, women continued serving as church leaders, deacons, teachers and prophetesses. The author of the Acta Theclae praises Thekla, a woman teacher in about A.D. 180. Tertullian, identifies this author as a "presbyter" of Asia Minor and makes no objection to Thekla teaching.

It was not until A.D. 325, when the Roman leader Constantine declared Christianity the official religion of Rome, that the Church adopted the Roman practice of men alone holding positions of authority. And, it was not until A.D. 494 that Pope Gelasius declared that women no longer could serve as priests.

"Women priests?" Hannah exclaimed.

"Apparently both men and women held positions of authority until the early church became influenced by the Romans."

Women continued to exert leadership, but outside of the institutional church. Argular von Grumback (1492-1563) was a powerful proponent of the Reformation whom Martin Luther described as "making a valiant fight with great spirit, boldness of speech and knowledge of Christ." During the Puritan era, Anne Hutchinson (1591-1643) began services in her home with her congregation including Henry Vane, governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

During the seventeenth century, the Quaker movement began accepting women in an equal role in ministry. Mary Fell, who became founder George Fox's wife, wrote Women Speaking. Arguing against the Puritan ban of women speaking in church, she wrote that the ministry of women was "Justified, Proved, and Allowed of by the Scriptures."

The holiness movement, in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, declared that sons and daughters would prophecy as they were filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit. John Wesley (1703-1791) employed women as class leaders and one or two as preachers. Luther Lee, one of the founders of the Wesleyan Methodist Connection of America, preached the ordination sermon of the first woman ordained in America in 1853 using Galatians 3:28 as his text.

Phoebe Palmer (1807-1874) preached across America and Britain leading thousands to totally commit themselves to the leadership and power of the Holy Spirit—including several bishops. Although she was not formally ordained, she wrote a dozen books and edited the magazine The Guide to Holiness. In response to those who opposed her preaching, she wrote The Promise of the Father in 1859, inspiring thousands of women to go into the ministry.

When William Booth, who would eventually found the Salvation Army, began courting Catherine Mumford, much of the correspondence included her arguments for the full equality of women to minister. In a sixteen-page letter dated April 9, 1855, Catherine wrote: "I believe woman is destined to assume her true position, and exert her proper influence by the special exertions and attainments of her own sex. . . . May the Lord, even the just and impartial One, overrule all for the true emancipation of women from swaddling bands of prejudice, ignorance and custom, which, almost the world over, have so long debased and wronged her."

After her marriage in June of that year, Catherine Booth became a powerful preacher and advocate for women's right to serve the Church in equality with men. From the beginning until today, the Salvation Army ordains both husband and wife of married couples and gives them identical ranks, so half of the 17,000 ordained officers are women.

This movement of women serving with equality to men has continued to grow in mainline, evangelical, and holiness churches. The Church of England, which voted to ordain women in 1992, fifteen years later ordained more women (213) than men (210). According to the Hartford Institute for Religious Research, the United Church of Christ's clergy consists of 25 percent women, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) 19 percent, the United Methodist Church 15 percent, the Church of the Brethren and Episcopal Church 12 percent, Church of the Nazarene and the Wesleyan Church 11 percent.

It's estimated that 10 percent of all clergy in the United States are women.

Reason

"Hannah, one of the strongest reasons for both male and female ministers is the very image of God. 'So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.' I believe that it takes both genders to reflect—very inadequately, but reflect nevertheless—God's image. It just stands to reason to reflect that image in the church, we need both male and female ministers."

I went on to show God's feminine nature in Isaiah 66, "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you." Jesus yearns, "How many times I wanted to gather your children around me, as a bird gathers her young under her wings." Many of His parables presents God as a father, but the parable of the lost coin features a woman illustrating God's concern for the lost.

We continued to talk about Jesus' treatment of women—probably the strongest reason to allow women an equal role and responsibility in sharing the gospel. In a culture where women were uneducated and considered "chattel" (property), Jesus welcomed women disciples and defended the teaching of women in the famous story of Mary and Martha. He commanded the Samaritan woman at the well to go tell her village His message. He commissioned Mary Magdalene to share the most important message of all time: "He is risen!"

It stands to reason that a God, whose infinitely complex image is reflected in both male and female, would employ both men and women to serve His Kingdom.

Experience

I mentioned to Hannah that Gamaliel, the famous Pharisee and teacher of the law, when confronted with the disciples' teaching, appealed to experience. "For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God" (Acts 5:38-39).

While it's dangerous to base decisions on experience alone, the other three-fourths of the quadrilateral seem to line up. We have the experience of many effective women preachers and leaders, not just in ancient history, but today.

"Well," Hannah said, "You've given me some things to think about."

"All I'm asking you to do is honestly consider these four guideposts: scripture, tradition, reason and experience. Do they line up?"
Hannah put her Bible into her backpack and stood to leave. "I'll let you know if I change my major to Christian Ministries."

What would you do if you only had 30 days to live?

I keep a journal.

I started journaling a couple of years ago. I find it helpful, it makes me slow down and think through my thoughts. So often our minds race from one thing to another that you can start to feel like you have ADD. The process of writing down your thoughts forces you to follow thoughts all the way through and often times brings clarity to whatever problems have been dogging you.

One of the things that I have tried to do, is write my journals with the intent on them being read by my posterity.

I wrote a letter to my boys and I try to give them little tips that I have learned about life.

I am honest about my struggles and about my pain, I don't hold back or try to cover up how I am feeling. I think it will be important for them when they get older to be able to read my story and understand that I struggle just like they do.

There is a video at the bottom that I watched today, now... I am not indorsing Oprah, she has her own issues, but the guy doing the talk has some great points. I want to encourage you to watch it and glean anything that is helpful to you.

One of the points that he makes in his talk is that most people are good if you give them a chance to show you. I know all of the theological principals that none are good and that mankind is depraved. We are all sinners... I get that. The area where I agree with what he has to say is in the way we should not jump to conclusions about people, but give them lots of space to be who they are. The scriptures put it this way: Love believes the best.

If we would believe the best in others I think we would be amazed at how often they would rise to meet our expectations.

If you have not done something to chronicle your journey through this life, I want to remind you that today is the best day to start. Do something, keep a journal, organize your photos, something. This life is a gift and we should treasure each day that God gives us.

Update From Matthew G. in Ensenada

Hi there.

I am in Ensenada and feeling great!

Check it out: I love this place. Just pulling over the hill and looking down
into Ensenada made my heart feel so full. I feel at peace and I feel my soul
at rest. I'm sure the stretching is just around the corner though.

The ranch that I live at is georgeous. It's down in the pit of a valley and there are trees and things to look at and smell all around. I have a big room that I share with another guy, Tim. He is a little funny, partly akward, and mostly smelly. ...We're working on it.

The other two girls that will be working with me this summer are really nice. One is quiet and I get along with the other one really well. All of the staff are extremely nice, and super funny.

God has been so present and so good and it's only been a few days. I don't know why I would expect anything else from him though. I assume you've been thinking about me, so thanks for that. I cant wait to see what God has in store for this time. I hope I can be a blessing to this camp, and to Ensenada

There is much to say, but I've got to go so that's all you get for now.

Blessings

Matthew

45 life lessons and 5 to grow on!

I read this article on The Plain Dealer and thought you might enjoy it too. There are a lot of wonderful truths found in these 50 lessons. You may not agree with them all, but we sure can learn a lot from them!

Regina Brett's 45 life lessons and 5 to grow on
by Regina Brett
Sunday May 28, 2006, 10:13 AM
To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.

It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolls over to 50 this week, so here's an update:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.

17. You can get through anything if you stay put in today.

18. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Overprepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

36. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.

38. Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

42. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

43. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

44. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

45. The best is yet to come.

46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

47. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

48. If you don't ask, you don't get.

49. Yield.

50. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

Good things to ponder! Some of these sound cheesy but really if we would apply some of the wisdom found in here our lives would be better for it.

Blessings,

Pastor Willy

Do You Really Know Yourself?

Did you know…

1. If all 600 muscles in your body pulled in one direction, you could lift 25 tons.
2. More than half of your body’s 206 bones are in your hands and feet.
3. Your eyes can distinguish nearly 8,000,000 differences in colors.
4. Your digestive tract is 30 feet long.
5. One cubic inch of bone can withstand a 2-ton force.
6. Your ears can discriminate among more than 300,000 tones.
7. The surface area of your lungs is 20 times greater than the surface area of your skin.
8. Your heart pumps more than 2,000 gallons of blood every day.
9. There are 1,300 nerve endings per square inch in your fingertips. The only parts of your body more sensitive to the touch are the lips, the tongue, and the tip of your nose.
10. Every day, blinking causes the eyes to be closed for a half hour.
11. In an average lifetime, the hair on your head grows about 25 feet.
12. The human skull is made up of 29 different bones.

You are an amazing creation, made in the image of God!

Now I don’t know about you, but for me it can be easy to take this life for granted. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself with others and feeling like you’re just not that great. But you are!!

Aside from knowing God, the best part of my life is my family. Nothing else even comes close to bringing me as much joy and happiness as being a part of family. It is hard for me to describe to you the utter euphoria of having my boys randomly look at me and say, “daddy, I love you” or “daddy, you’re the bestest daddy in the whole world”.

There is nothing as comforting as a wife that I have complete trust in; that loves me and our boys; a wife who is an example of godliness to everyone.
It is a beautiful thing to me to be a part of a family that is there for you and loves you, warts and all.

Even though I may not be famous or have a boat-load of cash, even though I will probably not be asked any time soon to be a stand-in for Brad Pit, I wouldn’t trade my life for anyone else’s!

God created me to be me and He created you to be you.

I want to encourage you today to take some time and look over your life and give God thanks for all the blessings that He has given you.
Remember, God loves you more than you love anyone on this earth! He is especially fond of you and is pleased with you. You can’t earn His love or approval, He loves you!

Zephaniah 3:17 (Amplified Bible)
17The Lord your God is in the midst of you, a Mighty One, a Savior [Who saves]! He will rejoice over you with joy; He will rest [in silent satisfaction] and in His love He will be silent and make no mention [of past sins, or even recall them]; He will exult [dance, spin, twirl] over you with singing.

Part of the family,

Star Trek

I recently enjoyed the new Star Trek movie out at Bridgeport Village at the IMAX Theater. WOW! What a great movie, tons of action. Now let me just say that I am in no way pretending to be some kind of trekky, but even I, a mere laymen in the world of Vulcans, Klingons and space travel galore have to admit that the Star Trek franchise has truly reinvented itself.

I got to thinking about this a little bit and it reminded me of the church… not that we are all going to travel at light speed any time soon, but the fact that the package has changed, not the story.

The church must reinvent how we package ourselves to be culturally relevant and attractive. The gospel never changes but the music should! The message should never be updated, but our style and methods have to be understandable to the culture that we find ourselves in.

It was really cool for me to learn some of the “back story” to Star Trek and I was very impressed how authentic they kept it. Tasteful use of some of the classic phrases that have become part of our culture, “Beam me up Scotty”, “I’m a doctor Jim” and “I’m giving her all she’s got” along with a few other well placed gems.
In a lot the same way I think that folks who come to our church are hungry to hear this life saving message that we all know by heart, they just want it in a way that they can understand!

Southside is a unique church in that we have the ability to reach folks in a non-traditional setting using non-traditional means. We can blow up a bottle of Diet Coke and we won’t even get in trouble for it!

One thing that never changes is how God has designed His church to work. Evangelism. The responsibility and the privilege rests on each of us. The same method that has been used for the last couple thousand years of reaching our neighbors with our personal story is still the best method today.

It just takes some men and women who are willing to tell their story. The audience is there… are you ready to tell them the one story that will lead them to their lives being transformed and their future with God coming to life?

Live long and prosper!

new web site

Hey Southside!!

Have you checked out the new web site (www.southsidenewberg.org)?

I want to point out a few new features to you that are quite frankly, the bomb.

Our site gets found mostly by folks searching for prayer in Newberg. As a result we have added a prayer request link at the top of the page. This is a really cool feature where you can send in a prayer request online and it gets to the elders for prayer. Try it out!

You can look at and sign up for community groups and do your giving online now too (well almost, we are still waiting for that to go through with PayPal, but soon).

There is a “what's happening” place on the home page where you can go to see what's going on at the moment.

There is a link to this blog and a new page "Just for Kidz".

It is a really cool site and it is only going to get better!

Sooo, I want to send a big, Thank You out to Jeremy and Jeff for working on our web stuff.

Be blessed as you walk daily in His Will,

Pastor Willy

Community Groups Summer of Love

The Summer of Love is upon us!!

Community Group sign ups have begun and this is your opportunity to plug in make new friends at Southside.

All of us need God and all of us need community. This summer, starting in June, community groups will begin their 12 week summer term and this will be a great place to get closer to God and to make some new friends.

We are calling this the Summer of Love because we are asking each group to do some kind of community service project at least three times over the summer!! We want to let our neighbors know that God loves them and so do we.

There are different kinds of groups that will be doing different fun activities so be sure to check out a catalog or look online (P.S. there are enough catalogues for you to take extra and give to a friend who might benefit from joining a group).

Community Groups are who we are! If you are at Southside you need to be in a group.

You can sign up to join one of these groups THIS MONTH ONLY. After the groups start you will not be able to join a group until new groups begin this fall. Sooooo, take the plunge and get in a group today!

Here are some quotes from folks who have been in a small group:

“Men’s small group was life changing; I got to grow up learning to be a man in a godly way with some of my best friends!”

“Community groups changed my life; I think everyone who wants to get closer to God and make friends should get in one.”

“If you want to get to know other people and even yourself better you should be in a group. Some of my best friends today are from people I met in a group… including my wife!”

If you are ready to go for it, here is a link where you can sign up online:
http://southsidenewberg.org

Remember, you can only sign up this month. Next groups will not start again for four months!

Sign up today!!

P.S. Pastor Evan and I are leading a group and we would love to have you!

Town Hall For Hope

Many of you have been struggling in the current financial crisis. So, Southside has partnered up with Dave Ramsey to help bring some clarity to the delima we find ourselves in.

You are all invited to a Free event where Dave Ramsey will be addressing three primary conserns.

1. Dave will offer straight talk about the economy, recession, foreclosures and more.
2. He'll carefully explain where we've come from and where we are now.
3. Last, Dave will explain what we should be doing with our money during this time.

To conclude the event Dave will spend an hour answering your questions live!

I will be personally hostin the event from my home in Dundee. The event starts at 6:30 pm and is open to everyone! We're going to set up a big screen and watch Dave live! Snacks will be provided, childcare will not be available at the event due to space limmitations.

Town Hall for Hope - Dave Ramsey

Dave Ramsey

Hey Southside!

I know that many of you are struggling right now with the current recession. A couple of years ago Angel and I took Dave's "Financial Peace University". We found it to be a very good class that was helpful in showing us how to manage our finances.

If you are at a place where you are not sure what to do next, I would like to recommend a good book for you to read, "Total Money Makeover". You can find the book for $6 at:

Amazon

I will also be a host for the FREE live event that Dave is doing on 4.29.09. You are all invited to watch Dave at my house and bring a friend or family member with you.

These are tough times and as the church we have got to get ourselves together so that we can be there to help others when everything falls apart!

For more info click on the banner at the top and watch the video at the bottom of this blog post.

Focus!
